The hymn is explained in six parts, following its flow.

📜 The Setting
On the battlefield, Rama is tired and anxious as Ravana advances for battle. Sage Agastya arrives with the gods and tells Rama he will teach him an ancient secret that will bring victory over all enemies.
📜 Glory of the Hymn
The sage praises this hymn: it destroys enemies, brings victory, removes worry and sorrow, and lengthens life. Rama is told to worship the rising Sun, the radiant lord of the worlds.
📜 The Sun as All Gods
The Sun is praised as the embodiment of all the gods — Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Indra, Kubera, Yama, Varuna and more — who sustains the worlds with his rays.
📜 Names and Epithets of Surya
Many names and epithets of Surya follow, such as Aditya, Savita, Surya and Bhaskara. He is golden, thousand-rayed, the dispeller of darkness and the lord of the day.
📜 Salutations and Worship
The hymn continues with salutations to the Sun as the sustainer and awakener of all beings, and as a refuge in hardship, danger and fear. Rama is advised to worship him with a focused mind.
📜 Conclusion
Agastya says that reciting this hymn three times will bring victory in battle, and departs. Free of sorrow, Rama sips water three times, takes up his bow and recites it. Pleased, Surya urges him on, and Rama advances to fight Ravana.
